  • Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona are arguably the two greatest footballers to have ever featured in the game
  • In 2005, the superstars were said to have played in the same team during an all-star charity match back home in Argentina
  • They also worked together between 2008 and 2010 when Maradona was in charge of Argentina’s national football team

Argentine legends of different eras Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona were once teammates as they graced the same pitch during a charity match in 2005.

The pair, who are arguably the greatest players to have graced the game, were linked together and they remarkably played alongside each other.

Messi was just 10 years old when Maradona retired from professional football in 1997 as the little chap was still on the learning course at Newell’s Old Boys.

Maradona had left a staggering mark over his incredible career and Messi was poised to take over the mantle several years after.

Both superstars then crossed paths when Maradona became manager of Argentina between 2008 and 2010, when Messi was at the height of his powers with Barcelona.

But Daily Star reports that they had already played together three years earlier during an all-star charity match in Argentina in 2005 when Messi was just 18 and Maradona was 45.

A clip on the internet shows the duo featuring in the game which includes other Argentina legends like Juan Riquelme, Diego Simeone, Marcelo Gallardo, Sergio Aguero and Juan Sebastian Veron.

A youthful Messi is shown exchanging passes with Maradona, who still has glimpses of his otherworldly talent despite his age.

Putin named the three greatest footballers ever

Meanwhile, Russian president, Vladimir Putin, has named his choices when asked about whom his greatest footballers of all time are.

The 69-year-old practically snubbed Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in his selection of the world’s top three footballers.

Despite splitting 12 Ballon d’Or titles between themselves, with Messi winning it seven times while CR7 has five of the awards, Putin instead opted for players who dominated the game in the past.

He named Pele and Diego Maradona when asked about the top two spots after the duo dominated the game throughout the 1960s and 1980s respectively.

Messi, Suarez on the radar of MLS side Inter Miami

Sports Brief earlier reported that Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez could be reunited again as both players have been identified as top targets for Major League Soccer side, Inter Miami.

Messi and Suarez were part of a dominant Barcelona team and won several titles together including the UEFA Champions League in 2015.

Inter Miami co-owner, David Beckham is eager to sign four core players of Barcelona's 2014-15 treble-winning team to help transform his MLS outfit.
