  • Tuchel said his side stopped defending after they succumbed to a 4-1 defeat to Brentford
  • Antonio Rudiger gave the hosts the lead but quickfire goals from Brentford turned the game around
  • The Chelsea boss also seemed to suggest his team was suffering from mental exhaustion

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel felt his players simply “stopped defending” in the 4-1 capitulation against Brentford on Saturday, April 2.

The Blues were overwhelming favourites to beat the Bees in a London derby, and went ahead early in the second half in superb fashion as Antonio Rudiger fired in a rocket.

But Thomas Frank’s opponents somehow managed to stage a comeback, scoring four goals to defeat their opponents for the first time since 1939.

Vitaly Janelt got a brace while Christian Eriksen continued his dream return to football with a goal of his own as Chelsea exhibited a rare case of fraility in defence.

While the Blues remain third on the log despite the defeat, conceding four goals against a side battling relegation raised concerns, particularly from the manager.

What Tuchel said

Speaking immediately after the game, Tuchel was quick to point out his side’s defending as they key reason behind their crumble.

“Nobody saw it coming, especially after going 1-0 ahead. It was very untypical of us. But we stopped defending. We were not aware of enough of the danger, were sloppy with the defending and got punished,” Tuchel said as quoted by Mirror.
"They made the most of it in those 10 minutes. Right after their third goal we had 10 minutes where we had big, big chances and we missed them. They were lucky and clinical enough to get three goals. We did not defend like it is needed to in the Premier League and got punished."

Tuchel and his Chelsea wads will have to put the defeat behind them quickly as they face another tough game against Real Madrid on Wednesday, April 6.

Chelsea fans hold protests outside Stamford Bridge

Prior to the defeat against Brentford, Sports Brief reported of how Chelsea Supporters Trust (CST) staged protests outside Stamford Bridge.

The protests revolved around the fact that the fans do not want Chicago Cubs owner Tom Ricketts to take ownership of the club.

According to the CST, 77% of its members do not support the Ricketts family’s bid for the Premier League club
