FootballAlgeria Request a Rematch Against Cameroon, Blame Referee’s Decisions for Their Defeat in World Cup Qualifier
- Algeria have also approached FIFA, asking that their World Cup qualifier against Cameroon be replayed
- Algeria have blamed the Gambian referee's decisions for their loss in the second leg against Cameroon
- Referee Bakary Gassama, who officiated the game, has previously been accused of controversial decisions
Algeria have become the second team to approach FIFA, requesting a rematch of their World Cup qualifier.
Egypt first announced their intention to approach FIFA requesting a replay, as they were unhappy with the hostile environment in which the second leg was contested against Senegal.
Algeria have now also requested a rematch, asking FIFA that their game against Cameroon be replayed due to the referee’s decisions during the game, KickOff reported.
Algeria beat Cameroon 1-0 in the first leg and lost the second leg 2-1, losing the tie on the away goals rule. But the manner in which they lost the second leg is what prompted the Algerian Football Federation to request a reply.
Algeria were unhappy with Gambian referee, Bakary Gassama, who ruled out a potential winner for Algeria. Cameroon took an early lead, levelling the tie on aggregate.
Algerian striker, Islam Slimani, had two goals chalked off, one due to an offside and one due to a handball decision. The goal was originally allowed to stand, but the decision was overturned by Gassama after he consulted with the Video Assistant Referee, Goal.com reported.
Algeria would get a goal in the 118th minute, and looked to be heading to the World Cup, but Karl Toko Ekambi scored in the 124th minute to give Cameroon the win.
The match is not the first time that Gassama has been at the centre of controversy. During the AFCON tournament, Egypt protested Gassama officiating their clash against Cameroon. He would go on to referee the heated game, showing Egyptian coach Carlos Queiroz a red card towards the end of the encounter.

FootballEgypt to request a rematch against Senegal, upset with the hostile environment they played the second leg in
Senegal are still celebrating their victory over Egypt in a World Cup qualifier, but the Pharaohs aren’t taking the defeat lying down, Sports Brief earlier reported.
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) originally filed a complaint with FIFA and CAF over the hostile treatment they received from Senegalese fans, and are now planning to take it one step further.
As reported by KingFut.com, the EFA are planning to approach FIFA and request a rematch with the Senegalese side. The Egyptian side were unhappy with the treatment they received as their team bus was attacked by an angry mob and their players were racially abused by fans.
