Other SportsHuge blow to Kenya as FIFA ratifies suspension from international football
- 198 FIFA Member Associations voted in favour of Kenya being suspended
- In February, the FIFA council had suspended the Football Kenya Federation due to third party government interference
- Following the ratification of the suspension, FIFA President confirmed the only way it would be lifted was whe Kenya reinstates the ousted Football Kenya Federation
Kenya has been dealt a blow as the Football Kenya Federation was slapped with an indefinite suspension after a landslide poll by the FIFA Council Members.
In a crushing blow to the country’s football, 198 Fifa members voted for the suspension, with only one voting against it.
The decision came five weeks after Fifa Council suspended the FKF on grounds of “third-party interference” following the Kenyan government’s move to disband the Federation to form its own caretaker committee.
There is however still hope for Kenya to have the suspension lifted, but the government would have to play by the FIFA rulebook.
According to FIFA president Giani Infantino, pertinent requirements have to be fulfilled for the suspension to be lifted.
This includes the reinstation of the ousted Football Kenya Federation.
"The FIFA council suspended Kenya on February 24th with immediate effect due to third party interference, in particular, the takeover of football by a Caretaker Committee appointment by the government which is a serious violation of the FIFA statutes.” Said the FIFA President.
"It is therefore recommended that the Congress confirms the suspension of the Football Kenya Federation enabling the council to lift the suspension immediately and as soon as the pertinent requirements have been fulfilled,"
What suspension means for Kenya
As long as suspension remains in place, Kenya risks missing out on the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations altogether as there is currently no chance of taking part in the qualifiers.
Also, Kenyan clubs will be unable to take part in continental football next season including the CAF Champions League or the Confederation Cup.
