- Kaizer Chiefs threw everything they had at Golden Arrows but they could not find that crucial equaliser
Golden Arrows kept their first clean sheet in a winning effort this season as they beat Kaizer Chiefs 1-0.
Golden Arrows fought valiantly and clung on to the win, no matter what Kaizer Chiefs through at them.
Knox Mutizwa gave Golden Arrows a golden start as he scored in the fifth minute of the game. The forward had Eric Matoho to thank for the chance though as the defender attempted to play a back pass but didn’t put enough power on it. Mutizwa ran onto the ball and shot at goal, chipping Bruce Bvuma who was way off his line. The goal came as a bit of a surprise to Chiefs as the Amakhosi started the game better.
Khama Billiat and a returning Samir Nurkovic gave Chiefs hope as they combined well upfront. Golden Arrows looked likely to get a second throughout much of the first half as Pule Mmdoy, Knox Mutizwa Sbonelo Cele were lively upfront.
Chiefs almost equalised at the half-hour mark through a freekick. Keagan Dolly ruffled the top of the net as his freekick just skimmed over the crossbar.
Phathutshedzo Nange came close to scoring a stunning goal in the 37th minute, but his volley was pushed away by Nkosinghiphile Gumede. The attempt was also Chiefs’ first shot on target.
Golden Arrows could have gone scored two more goals within three minutes as Bvuma first saved a tricky freekick and then Nduduzo Sibiya missed a perfect chance as he blasted his shot high and wide.
Golden Arrows took a lead into the break and would have been disappointed not to have a bigger one. The second half saw Chiefs start on the front foot as they searched for an equaliser. They lacked that spark in the final third and their shots were catching practise for Golden Arrow’s keeper, Gumede.
Ghanaian Striker Kwame Peprah Scores as Orlando Pirates Suffer Defeat to Kaizer Chiefs
FootballChiefs were relentless in their attempts to get a goal back as they threw everything they had at Golden Arrows. There was a scary moment in the 75th minute when Billiat and Sibisi both jumped for a ball and collided with each other. Sibisi and Billiat banged heads in mid-air, a clash that drew blood from both of them.
After a lengthy break, Sibisi returned to the field all bandaged up, but Billiat was substituted. Despite Chiefs' best efforts, they could now find a breakthrough and Golden Arrows hung on for the win.
Ironically, the loss for Chiefs came a day after they won their arbitration case, meaning that they had a shot at challenging Mamelodi Sundowns this season. The loss has dented those hopes.
