President of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) Samuel Eto'o took a trip down memory lane to reflect on his country's first AFCON title.

Exactly 38 years ago - March 18 1984 - Cameroon defeated Nigeria by three goals to one to clinch their debut continental title.

Since then, the Indomitable Lions have progressed to add four AFCON titles to their trophy cabinet - 1988, 2000, 2002 and 2017.

Eto'o has also contributed to two of Cameroon's five titles as a footballer and will hope he will be able to help his nation win more titles in his new capacity as a football administrator.

How did Cameroon win their first AFCON in 1984

Côte d’Ivoire hosted the 14th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations which featured eight nations.

Cameroon, who were making their fourth appearance at the competition, were drawn in Group A and finished second behind Egypt.

The Indomitable Lions faced Group B winners Algeria 5-4 on penalties in the semi-finals while finalists Nigeria defeated Egypt via shootouts to book a date with Cameroon.

In the finals, Nigeria drew first blood after just ten minutes through Mudashiru Babatunde "Muda" Lawal.

Defender René Brice N'Djeya drew parity for Cameroon two minutes after the half-hour mark before the Indomitable Lions turned on the heat in the second half as Théophile Abega and Érnest-Lottin Ebongué ensured a 3-1 victory.

The 1984 tournament featured legendary names like Rabah Madjer, the late Stephen Keshi and Roger Milla.

Samuel Eto'o sends heartwarming message to new Cameroon coach Rigobert Song

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that the President of the Cameroonian Football Federation, Samuel Eto'o has sent a congratulatory message to former teammate and new coach of the Indomitable Lions Rigobert Song.

Song was named coach of the five times African champions on Monday following the sacking of António Conceição after a disappointing AFCON in Cameroon.

In a message posted on Twitter, Eto'o is delighted to be working alongside his former captain and believes he can steer the country in the right direction.
