  • A protestor stole the show at the Everton vs Newcastle game as he tied himself to the goalpost by his neck in the second half
  • The man in question is believed to have been protesting the effect of new oil fields on the environment
  • It took the efforts of several stewards and giant bolt-cutters to free the man in stupefying scenes
  • Everton eventually won the game 1-0 thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Alex Iwobi

There was a bizarre moment at Goodison Park on Thursday, March 18 when a protestor tied himself by his neck to the goalpost during the Everton-Newcastle clash.

The crunch Premier League encounter was tipped to have drama and fireworks, but no one expected the kind of incident that took place shortly after the second half.

In the 50th minute of the match, a young male fan ran onto the pitch and tied himself to Asmir Begovic's goalpost at the Gwladys Street end goalmouth by tightening a zip-tie around his neck.

Stewards instantly sprung to action but were unable to remove the zip-tie from the man’s throat, and eventually, another ground worker arrived with giant bolt-cutters to cut the man loose.

Interestingly enough, the ridiculous scenes were fully broadcasted by Amazon Prime.

Several attempts later and the man, who was wearing an orange shirt that read “Just Stop Oil”, was eventually freed.

More drama

The drama did not end there, as the protestor somehow refused to leave the field of play despite the interruption he had caused and boos from supporters.

He eventually had to be physically hustled out of the stadium, but this was not before another Everton supporter invaded the pitch to express his frustration at the protestor.

“Just stop Oil”

Moments after the unusual incident, a Twitter account under the handle @JustStop_Oil shared what they claim was the identity of the man.

"This evening, Louis, a 21-year-old supporter of Just Stop Oil, locked on to the goalpost at Goodison Park wearing a Just Stop Oil t-shirt, causing the referee to briefly stop play,” they tweeted.

"It's 2022 and it's time to look up, time to step up and not stand by. It's time to act like it's an emergency. Report after report is telling me that my future is going to be dire, and my government is telling me not to worry and pay into a pension.
"Our government is betraying us by funding new oil fields in the North Sea. New oil means destruction of our children’s future. It means war on small island states. And it means suffering now for the poorest and most marginalised in all regions."

Iwobi gives Everton much needed victory

As far as the game is concerned, Everton claimed all three points thanks to Nigerian Alex Iwobi’s 99th-minute winner.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin teed up Iwobi to score the biggest goal of his much-maligned Everton career since a £40 million move from Arsenal three years ago.

Just a second win in 12 league games was met with jubilant celebrations at full-time with the financial implications of relegation dire for Everton.
