DStv Premiership preview: Orlando Pirates Football Club vs Cape Town City
FootballDStv Premiership: Kaizer Chiefs Coach Stuart Baxter Hangs on to Thin Title Hopes
- Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter is hoping for one of the great miracles in the history of South African football
- The Amakhosi mentor is still banking on Mamelodi Sundowns to somehow collapse in a one-horse DStv Premiership title race
- Chiefs is currently 16 points behind the Tshwane log leaders, though they do have four matches in hand over the Brazilians
Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter believes the DStv Premiership title race is not over quite yet.
Chiefs trails Sundowns by 16 points, but do have four games in hand, though whether they will get to play two of those is questionable.
The AmaKhosi did not pitch up to play Cape Town City and Lamontville Golden Arrows in December, citing a massive Covid-19 outbreak in the squad. The Premier Soccer League wants them to forfeit the games, but Chiefs are fighting back and claiming force majeure.
If Chiefs do have to give up the points then it is likely the title race is all but over, but Baxter remains hopeful they can spring the most unlikely of surprises this season.
According to SuperSport, Baxter said:
"We don’t know where the two games are going as yet. However, what we have to do is bring pressure to them [Sundowns]. If we are given those two games to play, it is a potential six points and then we have to play Sundowns one more time."
“If we can beat them in that game and keep breathing down their necks, maybe they will drop a few points. They are engaged on more than one front so they know that it is their league to lose, and we will be fools to say we are going to [win the title]."
"What I can say we are going to do is breathe down their necks as long as we can and as hard as we can so that when we actually play them it means something. It could also be that we don’t get to play [December’s two matches], and we lose the next game and Sundowns wins and then people say it is all over."

Football“That is a possibility too. For now, every win we get prolongs that possibility that we could be breathing down their necks and we will do anything we can to do that.”
Chiefs are next in action at home to Golden Arrows on March 19 - this coming Saturday - in the reverse fixture of December’s clash.
Kaizer Chiefs planning to combat possible inactivity boredom over the next 10 days to stay match sharp
Kaizer Chiefs has to wait 10 more days to next kick a ball in anger.
As reported on Sports Brief, this comes after having been knocked out early in the Nedbank Cup a few weekends ago.
Since then, they defeated Orlando Pirates in the Soweto derby, and would dearly have loved to maintain this winning momentum.
