Orlando Pirates’ midfielder, Nkanyiso Zungu, have been suspended by the club after he was arrested over the weekend.
Zungu was charged at the Moffatview Police Station on Sunday night, hours after the Buccaneers beat Royal Leopards at the Orlando Stadium on Sunday evening in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Orlando Pirates took to their Twitter account to confirm that the player was indeed suspended following his arrest.
“As this matter is currently in the hands of the authorities, the Club is unable to make any further comment until this process is complete,” Pirates noted in their official statement.
As reported by eNCA, Pirates would not say why Zungu was arrested by police or what charges have been currently laid against him.
Zungu’s career has failed to spark at Pirates
Much was expected from Zungu when he signed for the Buccaneers from Stellenbosch FC in January 2020. The player was thought to be a star of the future. Sadly he has never reached his full potential at the club and has only played one game for the Buccaneers this season in the DStv Premiership.
CAF Confederation Cup match report: Orlando Pirates thrashes Royal Leopards, quarterfinals beckon
In other news related to the Buccaneers, Orlando Pirates thrashed a hapless Royal Leopards side 3-0 in a CAF Confederation Cup group B encounter at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto on Sunday evening, Sports Brief earlier reported.
The Buccaneers climbed to the top of the group standings - two points clear of second-placed Al-Ittihad of Libya, who have a game in hand, while Eswatini's Leopards remained fourth on the table without a single point.
As reported on SuperSport.com, Ingwe Mabalabala started the match brightly and they forced the Buccaneers into conceding several corner-kicks. Mzwandile Mabelesa's headed effort from one of the corner-kicks narrowly missed goalkeeper Richard Ofori's right upright.
