Chelsea put their off-field woes behind them

The hosts went into the clash off a difficult week surrounding the future of Roman Abramovich as the club's owner.

Abramovich was recently sanctioned by the UK government over his alleged close ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The drastic move plunged Abramovich's earlier plan to sell Chelsea into uncertainty, with the west Londoners currently grappling with a financial crisis.

However, Thomas Tuchel's charges put those woes behind them to secure a morale-boosting win at home.

Newcastle's remarkable form brought to a halt

On their part, Newcastle took the Stamford Bridge trip off a fine run of form that has seen them steer clear of the relegation zone.

Eddie Howe's men were on a nine-game unbeaten run when they visited the west Londoners.

However, a Kai Havertz masterclass in the 89th minute of the clash brought Newcastle's remarkable streak to a halt.

The tie looked destined for a goalless draw before the German executed the most fabulous first touch of the match to bring the ball instantly under control before slamming it into the back of the net.

The win leaves the Blues sitting third on the log with 59 points, six behind second-placed Liverpool.
