Egyptian giants Al Ahly have asked Kaizer Chiefs for a favour, and the Amakhosi duly obliged them.
As was previously reported, the Red Devils, coached by Pitso Mosimane requested to use the Amakhosi headquarters in Naturena as a training base while in the country for their CAF Champions League clash with Mamelodi Sundowns.
As reported by Soccer Laduma, the arrangement was just for earlier this afternoon and wouldn't disrupt Chiefs’ own plans to use the pitches at The Village, though Amakhosi won’t be in any official action before March 19.
Ahly touched down in South Africa on Wednesday morning for their group stages return leg against Sundowns, who beat them 1-0 in Cairo two weekends ago.
They arrive with Mosimane having just signed a new two-year contract to keep him steering the ship following incredible success since joining them in October 2020 from Sundowns – the former Bafana Bafana mentor has two Champions League titles since.
Downs host Ahly on Saturday afternoon with the Egyptians trailing them by three points in Group A three matches in, and the visitors will be desperate to also get one over their continental rivals in their own backyard.
There is an interconnected history of note between Chiefs, Ahly and Sundowns. Al Ahly defeated Kaizer Chiefs in the 2002 CAF Super Cup and in the Champions League final last year.
Sundowns won its first continental title after beating Al Ahly in the 2016 final. This was after the Red Devils had accounted for them in the 2001 final
