Sad day in football as former player and coach of top European club dies
FootballSouth African Coach Pitso Mosimane Extends Al Ahly Deal Until 2024
- Former Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane has been rewarded with a new contract at Al Ahly until 2024
- The 57-year-old's new and improved deal runs for two further years after signing an initial two-year deal at the club
- Mosimane has won five trophies with Al Ahly, including two Champions League titles, two Super Cup trophies and the Egyptian Cup
Pitso Mosimane has signed a two-year extension to his Al Ahly deal, it has been confirmed.
The 77-year-old arrived in Cairo in October 2020, replacing Swiss manager René Weiler as head coach on an initial two-year deal with the possibility of an extension.
That extension has been granted after the South African, who resigned as head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns, delivered back-to-back CAF Champions League and two CAF Super Cup titles.
He also won the Egyptian Cup in 2020 and guided the Red Devils to two Club World Cup bronze medals.
Overall he led Al Ahly in 83 games, winning 59, drawing 17, while losing seven, with the team scoring 182 goals while conceding 70.
What Al Ahly said
Ahly announced on their website and social media platforms:
"Al Ahly SC are delighted to announce that Pitso Mosimane has signed a contract extension with the club for two more years.
"The coach and his assistants signed the new contract, ensuring they will remain at the helm until 2024."
Only Pitso Mosimane Can Save Manchester United
Sports Brief earlier reported that a Twitter user has cheekily suggested that Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane should be considered for the Manchester United managerial position.
The Red Devils were once again humiliated by Mancunian rivals Manchester City 4-1 in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon. It was another setback for current interim manager Ralf Rangnick as the club tries almost hopelessly to find its way after Sir Alex Ferguson left in May 2013.
Since then, United has gone through David Moyes, Ryan Giggs, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskaer in a now desperate search to find anyone who can fit in the footsteps of the the great Scottish mentor.
