  • Sadio Mané has lifted the lid on his missed penalty incident in the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations
  • The Liverpool star missed a glorious opportunity from the penalty spot in regulation time when Senegal faced Egypt in the finals
  • Before Mané's effort was saved by Gabaski, the Egyptian goalkeeper was given instructions by Mohammed Salah

Senegal international Sadio Mané has disclosed he has not had further discussions about his missed penalty in the finals of the AFCON with teammate Mohammed Salah.

Eventual winners of the 2021 AFCON, Senegal were awarded a penalty in the first half with Sadio Mané stepping up, as usual, to assume his set-piece responsibilities.

But before he took the penalty, Salah - Mané's teammate at Liverpool - had a brief conversation with goalkeeper Gabaski which the Senegalese opted to join in.

In the end, Mané's kick was saved by Gabaski, who won the man of the match award for his goalkeeping heroics in the finals.

That will count for nothing as Mané redeemed himself to score the matchwinning penalty to hand the West African nation their maiden AFCON title.

The incident was one of the memorable moments in the tournament and ahead of the FIFA World Cup qualifier between the two nations, Sadio Mané hinted he has not recounted the scene with Salah since it occurred.

"Me and Mo Salah don't even talk about it," Mané told the Que Golazo YouTube channel as quoted by Ghanasoccernet.
He added: "I think that I'm still thinking about my African Cup, but it's also an important game that means a lot to me and my people. Until now - you won't believe me - but we haven't talked about it, because I know he's still disappointed for sure." Mané ended.

He also took time to stress home the importance of the World Cup cliffhanger with Egypt.

"If we can qualify - and we will do everything to do it - it's very important for me, my teammates and my country because it's a really, really massive competition, which is a dream for any football player.

Mané refuses Liverpool AFCON celebrations out of respect for Salah

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Sadio Mané's level of respect for Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah is unapparelled after the Senegalese requested the English giants to not celebrate his AFCON success because of the Egyptian forward.

The AFCON winner played his first game at Anfield since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday, and there were plans to organise a congratulatory welcome for the Senegalese hero.

However, The Mirror reports that Sadio Mané made a special request to the club to boycott a celebratory ceremony for him out of respect for Salah.
