FootballFA Cup: Middlesbrough Shock Tottenham in Extra Time to Advance to Quarter-Finals
- Tottenham’s hopes for silverware this season came to an end through a crushing FA Cup defeat to Middlesbrough
- Chris Wilder’s side needed extra time to find the winner through 19-year old substitute Josh Coburn
- Despite being favourites to win the tie, Tottenham failed to dominate and Middlesbrough grew in confidence as the game wore on
Tottenham were stunned out of the FA Cup as Middlesbrough claimed a famous 1-0 victory in extra time to storm to the quarter-finals.
Substitute Josh Coburn found the only goal of the game, and it was nothing more than Middlesbrough deserved at the Riverdale Stadium.
Chris Wilder’s side, who knocked Manchester United out of the competition in the previous round, showed a lot of bravery against another top side for most of the game.
After a 0-0 stalemate in 90 minutes, the home side’s effort was eventually rewarded in the 107th minute when Coburn latched on to Matt Crooks' pass after some nice build-up.
The 19-year old then thumped an effort past Hugo Lloris to send the home crowd into delirium.
Boro claim deserved win
Coming into the game, Tottenham were expected to at least dominate against their opponents, who play in second-tier English football.
But Middlesbrough, who knocked out Manchester United in the previous round via penalties, was anything but a pushover.
Despite naming the same team that beat Leeds United 4-0 over the weekend, Conte’s side lacked ruthlessness, and were at times guilty of some lackluster moments.
One of the North London club’s best chances fell the way of Matt Doherty, who beat goalkeeper Joe Lumley, but failed to loop the ball into an empty net.
Harry Kane found the net, but his goal was ruled out for offside.
Isaiah Jones was menacing for Middlesbrough throughout the first 90 minutes, although chances were few and far between the two sides.
Once the game went to extra time, Middlesbrough showed more urgency and energy as Marcus Tavernier forced Lloris into a low save.

FootballHeung Min Son also tested the keeper, but his effort was fairly tame from a tight angle.
Eventually, Middlesbrough’s persistence paid off through Coburn, who said after the match that he was ‘speechless’.
"In front of the Riverside Stadium, you cannot get better than that against a Premier League team. Just amazing. I can't put it into words,” the teenager said.
Man City beat Peterborough to advance to the quarter-final
In the other game, Manchester City saw off Peterborough United as Pep Guardiola’s men kept the hopes of a treble alive.
Riyad Mahrez put his side into the lead with City’s first attempt on target in the 60th minute as Grealish sealed the victory seven minutes later.
One nice touch in the game was the fact that Ukrainian player Oleksandr Zinchenko was handed the armband in a sign of solidarity and support.
