- Samuel Eto'o has sent a congratulatory message to new Cameroon head coach Rigobert Song after sacking António Conceição
- The former Cameroon captain and defender is expected to build a new Cameroon team capable of competing for trophies globally
- Cameroon disappointingly finished third at the Africa Cup of Nations hosted in their country early this year
President of the Cameroonian Football Federation, Samuel Eto'o has sent a congratulatory message to former teammate and new coach of the Indomitable Lions Rigobert Song.
Song was named coach of the five times African champions on Monday following the sacking of António Conceição after a disappointing AFCON in Cameroon.
In a message posted on Twitter, Eto'o is delighted to be working alongside his former captain and believes he can steer the country to the right direction.
"Congratulations Rigobert Song, the new head coach of Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions. It’s a privilege and honour to once more stand shoulder to shoulder with my former captain, and take our football to new heights," wrote the former Barcelona man.
Despite finishing third at the Nations Cup in Cameroon, the Indomitable Lions hardly impressed as they struggled to convince.
António Conceição was on the line after Egypt defeated Cameroon in the semi-finals on penalties, and after the tournament it was obvious his time with the team is over.
Samuel Eto'o fired the Portuguese gaffer and handed over the reigns to the two-time Africa Cup of Nations winner.
Rigobert Song's first game in charge of the Cameroonian national team will be against the Desert Foxes of Algeria in the World Cup qualifiers playoff later this month, with the winner qualifying for the tournament in Qatar.
Rigobert Song appointed coach of Cameroon national team
Earlier, Sports Brief reported that the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon have named their former captain Rigobert Song as their new head coach.
A statement from the Cameroonian Sports Ministry, signed by the Minister, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, said Song had been appointed on the instruction of the country’s President, Paul Biya.
The statement said that current coach, Toni Conceicao and the entire technical team, had been replaced.
