FootballOrlando Pirates Coach Mandla Ncikazi Says the Team Was Given Hairdryer Treatment During Royal Leopards Tie
- Orlando Pirates coach said that the players were subjected to the Sir Alex Ferguson-like hairdryer treatment against Eswatini's Royal Leopards
- The Buccaneers made an absolutely shambolic start against the unfancied Leopards, who were forced to use Nelspruit's Mbombela Stadium as their homeground by CAF
- After having gone down 2-0 inside the first 10 minutes of the match, Pirates more than rallied to smash Leopards 6-2
Ncikazi said that he and co-coach Fadlu Davids factored in the Pirates' players' bad habits of starting matches slowly or generally losing concentration as the reason they were shredded. He added that this was why coaches had to get tough with them.
As reported by Sport24, This was the last straw as far as he was concerned, before the usually benign coaches flew off the handle, with Ncikazi adding:
“We had to kick some chairs. We had to break some desks because I thought the mentality that the team brought in the first half was not what we expected. Which we warned them about, that if we take things lightly, as we did, we cannot start matches like that, it’s unlike us."
“Sometimes you won’t have an opportunity to come back like what happened today, so a good start is important. We need to always have a positive start on the front foot. I don’t think today we did that. Luckily we could come back, but in other matches, we won’t have such an opportunity.”
The Buccaneers had just come of a stumble, drawing with Golden Arrows after losing to group rivals JS Saoura.
Pirates now has to contend with Cape Town City on Wednesday evening, before a massive collision with Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday afternoon in the Soweto Derby.
