Coming to the match against City, Bucs Reserves were desperate to get maximum points to keep the No 1 spot.

Pirates had dropped four points in their last two matches as they drew 0-0 with the same City two weeks ago and lost 3-2 to Chippa United last weekend. Those results saw second-placed Stellenbosch FC narrowing the gap from seven points to a single point at the top.

Pirates made their intentions clear in the match as they took the lead just seven minutes into the game, with defender Cassius Spandiel putting them in the lead with a tap-n after a goalmouth scramble.

The Citizens had a chance to level matters from a set-piece five minutes later, but Pirates goalkeeper Elson Sithole was equal to the task, making a save to protect his side's lead.

Pirates extended their lead in the 37th minute with a well-struck free-kick by the club captain Monyane.

They went to the break sitting on the lead. In the second half, both sides created chances, but none of them could find the back of the net.

Pirates now have 43 points from 19 matches, and they are one point ahead of Stellenbosch FC, who defeated Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 at FNB Stadium on the same day to increase their points to 42 from the same number of games.

Antonio van Wyk and Liam De Kock scored in the second half to earn Stellies maximum points away from home. Mduduzi Shabalala scored the consolation goal for coach Vela Khumalo’s charges.

AmaZulu 1-1 Mamelodi Sundowns

SuperSport United 3-1 Baroka

Marumo Gallants 0-3 TS Galaxy

Swallows 1-0 Sekhukhune United

Golden Arrows 1-1 Maritzburg United
