  • Amazulu continued their impressive start to an inaugural CAF Champions League campaign on Friday night
  • They made it two wins in a row after over overcoming ES Setif at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban
  • This victory saw Usuthu climbing up to second place in Group B, tied on points with Morocco's Raja Casablanca

The home team could have been leading before the first minute of the match after Setif goalkeeper blundered by missing the ball when coming off his line.

Staggeringly, Augustine Mulenga missed with just an empty net at his mercy, flooring the Amazulu coaching staff and a stunned Benni McCarthy, renowned for his deadliness in front of goal during his playing career.

As reported on Supersport.com, the Algerians were not intent on being spectators, though, threatening Amazulu's goals. Usuthu goalkeeper Veli Mothwa had to be alert as he thwarted Ibrahem Bodbous and Mohamed Ziti.

The hosts upped the tempo as the halftime break approached and they did break the deadlock. Luvuyo Memela scored with a deflected shot from outside the visitors' box in the 42nd minute and AmaZulu were leading 1-0 at the interval.

Usuthu continued to put pressure on the Black Eagles' defence with Siphelele Mthembu looking to use his imposing physique to unsettle the visitors and did well to turn inside the visitors' box, but his shot was deflected wide of the target.

The visitors looked dangerous on the counterattack and they nearly level matters through Ahmed Kendouci. The 22-year-old midfielder was sent through on goal, but Tapelo Xoki produced an excellent last-ditch block to deny Kendouci.

Nabil Kouki, the Setif head coach, reacted by making a triple substitution - introducing Ibrahim Farhi, Karim Nemdil and Khalil Darfalou. However, AmaZulu stood firm at the back and ultimately ran out 1-0 winners on the night.

Usuthu should have been 1-0 up within the first minute of the game after a mistake by the visitors' goalkeeper Zakaria Bouhalfaya, who came out and completely missed the ball.

Benni McCarthy’s Amazulu side has their first points in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League.

As reported on Sports Brief, Usuthu beat Horoya Athletic Club 1-0 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban thanks to a brilliant finish by Luvuyo Memela.

The midfielder produced something akin to a Bobby Firmino or Cristiano Ronaldo finish, as he neatly spun, and with his back to goal, neatly flicked the ball behind him and into the net, Sports Brief monitored.
