Brazilian soccer team Esporte Clube Bahia were involved in a bomb explosion on their way to a league match on Thursday.
Bahia took to Twitter to announce the worrying incident that saw their goalkeeper Danilo Fernandes hospitalised and two other players injured.
The team went ahead to play the match later that same day and won 2-0 against Sampaio Correia, thanks to goals from Daniel Sampaio Simoes and Hugo Rodallega, formerly of Wigan and Fulham, in the Copa do Nordeste, a regional championship in Brazil's northeast.
Bahia State Police Investigate the incident
According to a statement released by the Bahia state police, they have started investigating the incident which took place in the club's hometown of Salvador.
"We will collect footage, statements from players and witnesses that were on the spot at that moment. We will use our maximum capabilities to identify and arrest the perpetrators," police investigator Victor Spinola told media at the Arena Fonte Nova.
Reports on ESPN suggest that Bahia fans are among the suspects, in what seemed to be an attempt to intimidate players to deliver better results. No suspects have been arrested in connection with the case.
Bahia were relegated to Brazil's second division last year and has won only one of its last six matches.
