World football governing body, FIFA, has suspended Kenya from all international football competitions over government interference.

The development was confirmed on Thursday, February 24, by FIFA president Giani Infantino who announced Kenya's football federation had been suspended alongside Zimbabwe's.

"We had to suspend two of our members; Kenya and Zimbabwe, both for government interference in the activities of football associations. The associations are suspended with immediate effect," Infantino said.
"They know what needs to be done for them to be readmitted or for their suspensions to be lifted," he added.

FIFA warns Kenya

FIFA's decision to suspend Kenya comes just months after the federation warned the country of a possible indefinite ban if the sports ministry failed to rescind its decision to hound Football Kenya Federation officials out of office.

At the time, Sports Cabinet Secretary, Amina Mohammed, suspended the then Nick Mwendwa-led FKF from office before appointing a caretaker committee to take charge of football activities in the country.

Led by retired judge Justice Aaron Ringera, the caretaker committee's tenure was expected to run for a period of six months pending the election of new FKF officials.

The committee, whose reign ends on May 11, 2022, had promised to hand over power to new FKF office holders after elections set for April.

Wanyama's Montreal Impact through to Champions League quarters

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Kenya’s Victor Wanyama is set to grace the quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Champions League after his team Club de Foot Montréal overcame Santos Laguna on Wednesday, February 23.

Montreal Impact saw off their rivals 3-0 in what was perfect revenge against a side that broke their hearts in the same competition more than a decade ago.

Wanyama’s side went into the game with a huge task on their hands as they needed to overcome a 1-0 deficit suffered in the first leg a week earlier.
