UEFA is set to move the 2022 Champions League final away from the Russian city, St. Petersburg following the country’s military attack on neighbours Ukraine.
According to Spanish news outlet Marca, an extraordinary meeting of the UEFA executive committee has been called by President Alexander Ceferin.
The meeting will be held on Friday, February 25 to discuss the geopolitical crisis and possibly the change of venue of the 2022 Champions League final.
UEFA who held an emergency meeting on Thursday, February 24 released a statement condemning Russia's military actions against Ukraine.
It was initially believed that a de-escalation of the situation between Russia and Ukraine could see the match remain in Saint Petersburg but that is almost not possible following the invading of Ukraine.
Government, Federations task UEFA to take actions against Russia
Meanwhile, the British government and fan groups have asked UEFA to no longer play the UEFA Champions League final in St. Petersburg.
According to Reuters, Poland, Sweden, and the Czech Republic, Football Federations have also called for Russia not to be allowed to host World Cup qualifiers in April after its invasion of Ukraine
The Ukrainian Premier League has been suspended due to the Russian invasion as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared martial law in Ukraine.
