FootballAmazulu Coach Benni Mccarthy Confirms That Orlando Pirates Turned Down Defender Bongani Sam Offer
- Amazulu coach Benni McCarthy has clarified what happened in the matter of Orlando Pirates defender Bongani Sam
- Sam is currently out of favour at the Buccaneers, with McCarthy unsuccessfully explaining away revealing on air that he was in contact with him regarding a possible move away
- The former Bafana Bafana striker then put the matter to bed by confirming that Pirates refused Usuthu's transfer offer for the player
Outspoken Amazulu coach Benni McCarthy put to bed the rumours and suppositions surrounding out-of-favour Orlando Pirates defender Bongani Sam.
McCarthy got into a spot of bother by revealing on live radio that Sam was in contact with him looking for a move away from Gauteng to KwaZulu-Natal. The Usuthu mentor then came forward to reveal that Amazulu had indeed made an official approach for the want-away player during the December January transfer window.
According to The South African, Pirates instead opted against following through with the deal.
According to iDiski Times, Mccarthy said:
“Yes I’m a big fan of the young boy but I think there was a little bit of a miscommunication because the question was about Bongani Zungu and I was mistaken and thought I heard Bongani Sam. I was interested in the player but Orlando Pirates made it clear that he wasn’t going anywhere, there’s nothing I can do when a player messages you that he wants to come and play for you and that."
“I looked at it as a win-win situation but they weren’t ready to part ways with the player which I completely understand if you ruin the players’ career somewhat but instead of him going somewhere else and playing and be happy. They don’t want that, they are in their free right to do whatever it is they want.”
Sam has had limited game time because of Paseka Mako and Innocent Maela's impressive performances ahead of him. He has only made three league appearances for a combined 362 minutes all season.
