Former Minister for Youth and Sports Nii Lante Vanderpuye has disclosed that some players of Hearts of Oak were once dropped to the bench after they rejected to undergo a spiritual bath before a league game.

Black Magic, also known as 'juju', has hit Ghana football recently following allegations that some Black Stars players were engaged in enchantment during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon.

According to reports, players were involved in the use of 'juju' which affected the atmosphere in camp and caused the team's abysmal performance at the AFCON.

Commenting on the issue, Nii Lante revealed that black magic is not only destroying the senior national team but is also prevalent in the domestic teams in Ghana as well.

Nii Lante Vanderpuye, who was a management member of Hearts of Oak, shared a real-life experience on how some of his colleagues used to consult spiritual leaders for help.

I have observed certain situations where I was in Hearts of Oak management and certain player refused to bath certain waters and they were not allowed to play.

According to that player, it was against his spiritual belief. It got to a time when the Christians do their own, then the Muslims do theirs. It got to a time when we said that this nonsense must stop.

In 2012, Serbian trainer Goran Stevanovic accused players of using 'juju' in camp after the Black Stars finished fourth at the Nations Cup in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

“After losing to Zambia, there arose so many accusations amongst the players during my meeting with them. I have learnt great lessons from African football and also about Ghanaian players' behaviour on and off the field.”

“We all need to help in changing some players mentality about using black power to destroy themselves and also make sure we install discipline and respect for each other,” the report stated in part.
