Nigeria took a massive leap in their bid to qualify for the 2022 Women’s Cup of Nations as they defeated West African neighbors Ivory Coast 2:0 on Friday, February 18, the Vanguard reports.
American-born striker, Ifeoma Onumonu scored both goals for the Super Falcons as they outplayed the Ivorians at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja.
Onumonu opened her goal account in the 21st minute after a beautifully assisted pass from Esther Okoronkwo inside the box.
The American-born striker would seal victory for the Falcons in the second half as she lobbed the ball over the Ivorian goalkeeper in the 56th minute to give Nigeria a 2:0 advantage.
Both countries will again return to the pitch on Tuesday, February 22, in the reverse fixture in Abidjan as Ivory Coast will seek to overturn the first leg result.
Africa Women's Cup of Nations to serve as World Cup Qualifiers
The winner between the Super Falcons and Ivory Coast will qualify for this year’s Africa Women’s Cup of Nations to be hosted in Morocco.
The 2022 Women’s Cup of Nations is scheduled to kick off from 2nd to 23rd in July and will also serve as qualifiers for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
According to a report via Complete Sports, semi-finalists at the AWCON will qualify for the World Cup while two more teams will advance to the Inter-confederation play-offs.
