  • Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs were once regarded as true powerhouses of South African football
  • Orlando Pirates have not won the league since 2012 while Kaizer Chiefs last took the title in the 2014/2015 season
  • One fan caused a stir on social media when he suggested that local football would get a boost if Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs were strong again

Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs have always been giants of South African football, but it’s been a while that either team has proven to be a real force.

One Twitter user noted this fact, arguing that it would be a boost for South African football if Chiefs and Pirates were strong again, but not everyone agreed with his sentiment.

Orlando Pirates last won the league title in the 2011/2012 season while Kaizer Chiefs last won it in the 2014/2015 season, SoccerWay confirmed. The following years were dominated by Mamelodi Sundowns, except for Bidvest Wits taking the title in 2016/2017.

@Bheki_Nyathi had fans debating on Twitter when he said:

@DonSpovington_ was one of the very few to agree, saying that:

"When Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates were at their peak, even Bafana Bafana gave us hope. They were the Barcelona and Real Madrid of South Africa”

Others believed that there needed to be new teams rising up and that the league couldn’t just be about Pirates and Chiefs.

@Philani_VSMZI:

"I also think Sundowns is not celebrated as they should be! Patrice Motsepe deserves all applause for what he's done at Sundowns and SA football, the country should be very proud."

@Kgothatsowa1995:

"You guys can worry about Kaizer Chiefs, we as Orlando Pirates we are doing fine...thank you"

@arnoldmpofu07:

"I think it’s fine for Pirates and Chiefs to be where they are, for the transformation of SA football depends on them being where they are. A new fanbase is needed for the growth of the beautiful game. It doesn’t make sense for the whole nation to support 2 teams."

@Mgiji3:

"Last time those were strong was 1974 to 1985. Since the start of the professional league in South Africa, those teams are ordinary."

Mamelodi Sundowns has the last laugh, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs draw after making fun of Masandawana

Football can be a funny game where it's best not to celebrate until the final whistle is blown. In the case of Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, it was a case of don't celebrate before you play your fixtures though.

Sports Brief recently reported that with Mamelodi Sundowns surprisingly being held to a draw by Baroka FC on Monday evening, Pirates and Chiefs fans celebrated the Brazilians dropping points.

Despite the draw, Sundowns still held a healthy 17 point lead over Pirates and a 19 point leave over Chiefs. As one Sundowns fan pointed out, it was funny to see the team's celebrating their rivals draw, as if they had lost.
