Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez recently received support from an unlikely source after a poor game as his wife leapt to his defence on Thursday, February 17.
Gimenez had a poor game by his standards on Wednesday as Atletico Madrid succumbed to a shock 1-0 defeat to bottom side Levante in the La Liga.
Defeat at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium left Atletico Madrid in fifth place in La Liga and Diego Simeone’s side is well on course to relinquishing the title.
It was Gimenez’s first game for his side in a month after he was forced to isolate with COVID-19.
During the game, the defender saw one of his passes go astray, leading to jeers from frustrated Atletico Madrid fans.
His angry response did little to help the situation as it was only met with more jeers from fans.
Gimenez’s wife’s response
Taking to social media hours after the game, Gimenez’s wife Regina Lafolla showed admirable support to her husband after a poor game.
"It makes me very proud to listen to the people who always support you and more in difficult times,” she said in the post.
"Six days in bed and the seventh day in bed straight to the Wanda [Metropolitano Stadium], you went to play without thinking about the consequences that could have happened, at least, and the least serious, an injury.
"You are an example for me and for our children and I'll take that.”
Gimenez responded to the post by declaring his love for Regina in the comments.
