Pep Guardiola's side had travelled to Portugal to face Sporting Lisbon in their first leg of the last 16 of the European competition.

City were thoroughly impressive during the trip as they hammered their hosts 5-0 to have one foot in the quarter-finals.

However, on their way back, the Man City contingent had to take an unexpected detour and land in Liverpool instead due to high winds which hampered a safe landing in Manchester.

Daily Mail reports City's plane had to circle over Manchester three times before it was diverted to Liverpool's John Lennon Airport.

Video footage capturing the scary moment has since emerged, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.

In the footage, the Titan Airways Boeing 757 aircraft can be seen almost at a standstill in flight as it struggles with the high winds.

City plane lands safely

Meanwhile, the Premier League giants later confirmed the team eventually had a safe landing.

"We can confirm the plane transporting the first team home from Lisbon has landed safely in Liverpool, after high winds forced a diversion from Manchester," the club tweeted.

The development was also confirmed by the Liverpool Airport which said:

"Great to safely welcome Manchester City to the football capital of England."

Man City hammer Sporting Lisbon

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Man City have one foot in the quarter-final of the Champions League after demolishing Sporting Lisbon 5-0 in their first leg of the round of 16.

A Bernardo Silva brace and goals from Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez were enough to inspire City to a comfortable win.

Pep Guardiola's men will now shift focus to their upcoming EPL meeting with Tottenham on Saturday, February 19.
