Al-Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane believes he will never get the opportunity to coach a team in Europe.
The three-time CAF Champions League winner is known for his forthrightness, and did not pull any punches about perceived prejudices against African coaches overseas. He was speaking at a press conference of the South African Football Journalist Association.
Talking SowetanLIVE Mosimane said:
“Those are fairy-tale stories, my brother. That would never happen. Dwight Yorke said to me, 'Forget about Europe, you're never going to go to Europe. If we [black players] have scored goals in the Champions League, and have created so much history at big clubs like Man United, we have qualified for [coaching] badges from Europe, and we never get that... you will never get that."
Mosimane then laid into the absence of black coaches in the English Premier League.
The Citizen quoted him as saying:
“You want to tell me that out of all the black coaches in England, no one can coach? “It is unbelievable. Abedi Pele, Tony Yeboah, Dwight Yorke, John Barnes, where are they? You are telling me none of them can coach?"
“Let me stay in the continent and maybe in the Gulf (there are opportunities). We don’t need to do football in Europe.”
Mosimane has thus far won five trophies — the CAF Champions League twice, CAF Super Cup twice, and Egyptian Cup — since his move to Cairo giants Ahly from Mamelodi Sundowns in September 2020.
