In a game that Sports Brief monitored, Maritzburg United started much stronger and looked more comfortable as the game progressed.

The KwaZulu-Natal side played with a high tempo and kept control of the ball well in the early stages.

They were denied from taking the lead in the 10th minute when Ronwen Williams produced a brilliant save. Clayton Daniels put in a delightful cross from the left-wing which Friday Samu headed goalward. Williams had to dive quickly to the left to quick the ball out.

In the 15th Luke Fleurs was lucky not to be shown a straight red for a tackle on Tawanda Macheke. The player was shown a yellow despite the lateness of the tackle. Maritzburg United continued to press forward and won a few corners but couldn’t get anything out of it.

Their constant pressure paid off when Friday Samu produced a brilliant finish to give Maritzburg United the lead on the stroke of halftime. The Zambian did well to control a ball that was behind him, flicking it ahead, and then smartly finishing past Williams. The second half was a different story as Supersport United came out fighting.

Matsatsantsa a Pitori piled on the pressure from the get-go and got their reward just 10 minutes after the restart. Kudakwashe Mahachi floated in a freekick which was headed in by Jesse Donn. The 22-year-old did enough to keep the ball under the crossbar to score his first goal for Supersport.

Maritzburg then went on the charge again as the equalizer seemed to have woken them up.

Friday Samu was once again proving to be a terror for the Supersport defenders and justified why Maritzburg United signed him in January.

His persistence saw the Team of Choice take the lead just after 70 minutes. Samu made his way smartly into the box, drawing the defenders to him, before passing to Rowan Human. The midfielder found himself free of any pressure and calmly slotted home past Ronwen Williams.

Maritzburg United continued to play on the front foot as they tried to get a third. It wasn’t needed though as they hung on for a determined win. The win also ended a 10-game losing streak in the league. Most importantly, the win took Maritzburg United five points clear of the relegation zone.

A feast for DStv Premiership lovers: Kaizer Chiefs, Royal AM and SuperSport United headline a trio of games

Football lovers are in for a real treat today as the DStv Premiership serves up a trio of exciting games. Kaizer Chiefs, Royal AM and Supersport United all have tough encounters today, as they take on Cape Town City FC, Sekhukhune United and Maritzburg United respectively.

Five of the six teams involved in today’s games are in the top ten on the DStv Premiership league table and some are separated by very few points, so a win is crucial for all involved, Sports Brief earlier reported.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) shared the fixtures on their Twitter channel, which saw Shauwn Mkhize's Royal AM start off the day’s games by hosting Sekhukhune United, a team just a point behind them on the table.
