A clearance from Nuno Mendes saw Mauro Icardi secure a loose ball, passing it to Lionel Messi, who then fed it to Mbappe.

The 23-year old had enough space after Icardi’s decoy run into the box, and he picked his spot beautifully to slot the ball past Doğan Alemdar.

In celebration, the Frenchman decided to pay homage to another legendary striker – Thierry Henry.

Mbappe ran to the corner flag and leaned onto the flagpost, drawing similarities to Henry’s famous celebration while playing for New York Red Bulls in 2013.

On social media hours after his late winner, Mbappe confirmed that indeed his goal celebration was inspired by the Arsenal legend.

He posted a side-by-side photo of himself and Henry, along with the caption “Big up, legend”.

How the game went

For the longest time, it looked as though PSG would be frustrated to a draw, which would not have been too damaging in their title aspirations.

Throughout the game, the Parisians did not show the potency and flair in their attacks, something which fans expected especially considering the talents within the squad.

The French giants at times looked laboured and fatigued but somehow still managed to pull a rabbit out of the hat, thanks to their two most prized possessions – Messi and Mbappe.

Putting the Ligue 1 table aside, the result will also be a confidence booster, ahead of PSG’s Champions League first-leg tie against Real Madrid on Tuesday, February 15.
