- Summerfield Dynamos have progressed to the round of 16 for the first time in the amateur club's history
Summerfield Dynamos became the first amateur side to progress into the round of 16 of this year’s Nedbank Cup after they beat Uthongathi FC.
Summerfield Dynamos, representing the Chatsworth area, currently play in the ABC Motsepe League, the second division of South African football. Their opponents, Uthongathi FC, play in the GladAfrica Championship.
Coached by former Bafana player, Clinton Larsen, the amateur side started the game extremely well, showing that they weren’t scared of their much stronger opponents.
In a game that Sports Brief monitored, Summerfield Dynamos should have taken the lead in the first 20 minutes when Lucky Nguzana sent his shot well over the crossbar. Midfielder, Mcedi Vandala, made sure they weren’t punished for that miss when he gave his team the lead less than five minutes later.
Vandala did well to shepherd a pass into the box away from the defenders and waited for the keeper to come out, before lobbing it over him.
Summerfield Dynamos continued to look like the better team but couldn’t extend the lead.
Going into the second half, Uthongathi FC came out fighting but couldn’t find the back of the net. Dynamos’ keeper Bongani Masoga was brilliant between the post, easily handling any shot that came in from Uthongathi players. Uthongathi were also guilty of missed chances as they sent a few wide.
Uthongathi had 21 shots at the end of the day, but only five of those were on target. Summerfield Dynamos on the other hand had 10 shots with only one on target, the one which went into the back.
An elated Summerfield Dynamos held on to the lead to book their place in the next round. Speaking after the game, man of the match Masoga joked that they were so confident after making it to the next round that they wouldn’t even mind facing Mamelodi Sundowns next.

FootballMamelodi Sundowns down Richards Bay in the Nedbank Cup, score 4 to book their place in the next round
It’s no surprise that Mamelodi Sundowns beat Richards Bay in their Nedbank Cup clash but it was a surprise who scored. Surprise Ralani marked his Sundowns debut with a goal as the Brazilians cruised to a 4-0 win over their GladAfrica Championship opponents, Sports Brief reported.
Richards Bay started the much better side as the Rich Boys had more possession of the ball. The DStv Premiership defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns didn’t seem to settle at all in the early stages of the first half.
Richards Bay couldn’t capitalize on their few counter-attacks and was punished for it in the 25th minute when Surprise Ralani scored. Richards Bay keeper Malcolm Jacobs punched away a cross straight into the path of Ralani who put the ball away.
