Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly side will face Brazil’s Palmeiras today in the semi-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup.
The African champions notched up a record 16th game in the tournament when they took on Monterrey in their first game. Al Ahly has played the most matches at the Club World Cup.
Al Ahly beat Monterrey 1-0 thanks to a Mohammed Hany goal in the 53rd minute, FIFA confirmed on their website.
Al Ahly and Palmeiras contested the third/fourth playoff in the last Club World Cup tournament, with the Egyptians winning on penalties.
Al Ahly will also have their Egyptian internationals back for the tournament but Mosimane is unlikely to use them after their gruelling AFCON final.
A win for Al Ahly will book them a place in the final where they could face Chelsea.
The past eight editions of the tournament have been won by the team representing Europe.
Chelsea will take on Al Hilal in the second semi-final which will be played on Wednesday, 9 February, SuperSport confirmed.
Al Hilal booked their place in the semi-finals by beating Al Jazira 6-1. South Africa’s Thulani Serero stated before the tournament that he would have liked to see his Al Jazira side face Mosimane’s Al Ahly in the final, but they were comprehensively beaten.
Al Jazira did score first but could not hold onto their lead.
The final of the FIFA Club World Cup will take place on 12 February.
