  • David de Gea made 22 saves in January and now the Manchester United goalie has bagged Premier League’s Player of the Month award for January
  • United who started the season on a poor note are now in the top four and many have credited the goalkeeper for the feat
  • The Spaniard completed 8 saves in their league game against Brentford as he also helped Ralf Rangnick’s side to back-to-back wins

Impressive Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has been named the English Premier League’s Player of the Month for January, 90min reports.

The United shot-stopper performed brilliantly last month, making 22 saves – 5 more than anyone else in the English topflight.

He received the prestigious award as well as a special in-form card on EA Sports' FIFA 22 having been instrumental to the Red Devils’ back-to-back wins.

During their 3-1 win over Brentford, De Gea made eight brilliant saves before keeping his only clean sheet of the month in a last-gasp 1-0 victory at home to West Ham.

And somehow, Manchester United have returned into the top four and many believe it is partly due to De Gea’s heroics between the sticks.

A fast start to the 2021/22 campaign came crashing to a halt during a tough autumnal stretch for the Red Devils, with De Gea, who was dropped towards the end of last season, coming to United's rescue time after time.

Despite his heroics in a United shirt in the last decade, this is actually the first time that De Gea has won the Premier League's Player of the Month award.

Declan Rice snubs Man Utd

Meanwhile, Man United target Declan Rice has dealt the Red Devils a transfer blow after hinting at joining Chelsea.

Rice has been linked with a potential move to Old Trafford for some time now, with United desperate to sign a prolific anchorman in their midfield.

However, while speaking on Gary Neville's Overlap podcast, the West Ham star revealed he is settled in the capital London as he is living just seven miles from Stamford Bridge.

Rice noted that he plans to ‘stay close to home’ despite speculation over a potential summer move.

Joe Cole predicts United to make Champions League

Sports Brief earlier reported that Premier League icon Joe Cole has predicted Manchester United will win the race to secure the final Champions League spot this term.

United are already facing stiff competition from rivals Arsenal, Tottenham, and West Ham in the top-four battle.

Man City are in a pole position to retain the Premier League title, while Chelsea and Liverpool look set to seal the top three slots.
