Mamelodi Sundowns' women's team conquered all before them in 2021 in South Africa and on the continent, and have had their dominance rewarded.
The Sundowns Ladies were the recipients of a R1 million windfall from the Department of Sports and Recreation in recognition of winning the CAF Women's Champions League. This was on top of winning the Hollywoodbets Super League as well as the inaugural COSAFA Women's Champions League in a glorious year.
Minister Nathi Mthethwa was present at the Maslow Hotel in Sandton to hand over the cheque as part of his department's Recognition of Excellence programme, as reported on SowetanLIVE. The initiative recognises outstanding achievements by SA teams and individuals.

FootballMthethwa said the team was a source of pride for South Africans, adding:
"This recognition system further emphasises that as a country it is important that we give recognition to the exceptional performances of our athletes, coaches, administrators, and technical officials.”
Sundowns chairman Thlopie Motsepe confirmed to journalist Mahlatse Mphahlele in a Twitter video that the players and technical staff would share the entire cash prize.
Motsepe said:
“We always make sure our players and technical team are compensated for their efforts and their sacrifices. There is a way how money is divided. I can assure we have rewarded them for what they did and Hollywoodbets has also rewarded them.
"People who give the money do so to grow the sport and we don’t want to publicise the figures.”
