Robinho was once described as the future of football by Brazilian great Pele, but he will now face the next nine years behind bars.

Robinho was a star striker for Brazil who also played for Real Madrid, Manchester City and AC Milan.

Robinho was in 2017 convicted of the sexual assault of a young girl in a club in Italy. Robinho was convicted alongside a group of friends who were all charged with the crime.

Robinho has always denied the charges but a Supreme Court in Rome upheld the 2017 conviction, sentencing the former Brazilian star to nine years in prison, Soccer Laduma reported.

The former Real Madrid player is currently in his home country of Brazil. Brazil does not allow the extradition of its citizens, Sport Bible confirmed, meaning that he won't serve his sentence in Italy.

Fans have taken to social media following the news to express their shock. Fans spoke about how sad it was that stars of yesteryear are now struggling to make ends meet.

In other Brazilian football player related news,Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo has finally revealed Brazilian legends Ronaldinho Gaucho and Ronaldo De Lima Nazario as his football idols, Sports Brief earlier reported.

According to the Daily Post, the Portugal captain admitted he grew up watching the pair while acknowledging they have both left their legacy and history in the football world forever. The 36-year old revealed he had dreams of emulating the feat of both players while growing up and indeed the Ex-Real Madrid forward can boast of having achieved that and more.

Ronaldinho and Ronaldo Nazario were instrumental players who played a crucial role to help Brazil win their 5th World Cup trophy in 2002 as the latter would end up scoring twice in the final against Germany.
