Lucky Lekgwathi Reopens Food Outlet Months After It Was Looted in July Unrest

• Lucky Lekgwathi displayed the leadership and resilience he was known for on the field off it after misfortune befell him
• The former Orlando Pirates defender and captain was a victim of the looting that characterised last year's countrywide July unrest
• He reopened his restaurant, Grootman, surrounded by friends and well-wishers, relocating it from where it was attacked in Soweto

Lucky Lekgwathi has proven that you just can't keep a good man down.

The decorated legendary former Orlando Pirates defender was a victim of the July unrest. His restaurant Grootman, which is located in Kliptown, was looted indiscriminately during the violence.

Lekgwathi alleged that people close to him used the cover of the violence to steal from him, as reported on TimesLIVE.

He said:

"I got a call that they are looting in Kliptown. I didn’t go because he said they were not looting at our centre. But after a few hours, he called again and said they were looting at our centre. When I arrived, there was nothing inside the shop. It was sad because some of them are our friends, people who know me."

However the resilient Lekgwathi, displaying the leadership qualities he was renowned for on the pitch, recently reopened the restaurant.

Lekgwathi shared the relaunch of the restaurant with close friends, including Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Tshepo Maseko, Portia Modise and Edward Motale and his former coach Augusto Palacios. He also chose to relocate Grootman from Kliptown to Southdale Mall in Southdale.

Lekgwathi wrote in an Instagram video:

"We want to thank God, the public, media people, organisations and business people for making sure we are back in business after the looting back in Kliptown. We are truly grateful for all the love and the support received.

Lucky Lekgwathi's restaurant has been destroyed by looters in Gauteng

Ex-Orlando Pirates defender Lucky Lekgwathi is putting out the claim that some of his friends were among those that recently looted his restaurant in Kliptown, Soweto.

As reported on Briefly, the restaurant, 'Grootman by Lucky Lekgwathi', sustained extensive damage as the wave of public violence seen in other parts of Gauteng after it spread from KwaZulu-Natal swept through the southwestern township.
