Onyema made this promise after gifting the Super Eagles N10million for their victory against the Pharaohs of Egypt in their opening group D game.

Kelechi Iheanacho’s 30th-minute strike was enough to guarantee maximum points for Nigeria as the Super Eagles go top of Group D with 3 points after their win with Guinea-Bissau playing out a barren draw against Sudan in the group’s other game.

The Vanguard reports Onyema, who made the pledge in Garoua, Cameroon, while speaking to the Super Eagles during halftime in their opening game against the Egyptians, stressed that the players carry the hopes and aspirations of over 200 million people and 350 ethnicities on their young shoulders, urging them to give their best and win the trophy.

Nigeria will take to the pitch next on Saturday, January 15, when they file out against Sudan in a bid to seal a second-round spot after two games while Egypt will tackle Guinea-Bissau in the group’s other game.

Nigeria have won the AFCON on three previous occasions doing so in 1980 when the Green Eagles won on home soil, 1994 in Tunisia and in 2003 winning Burfina Faso by a lone goal in the final.

AFCON 2021: Chelsea ace Antonio Rudiger sends lovely message to Sierra Leone after hard-fought draw vs Algeria

Earlier Sportsbrief reported Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger was full of praise for Sierra Leone after they managed to somehow hold off defending champions Algeria in an Africa up of Nations Group E encounter.

With stars such as West Ham’s Said Benrahma also in the Algeria team, they somehow failed to break the deadlock, and it was largely due to the inspired form of Sierra Leone goalkeeper Mohamed N. Kamara who emerged as the man of the match.
