Arsenal set unwanted and heartbreaking Premier League record after loss to Man City
FootballFA Cup: Lukaku Back Amongst the Goals as Chelsea Ease Past Chesterfield
- Last season’s FA Cup runners up Chelsea stamped their authority in the game as early as the fifth minute
- It was 4-0 at halftime, with the Blues, who started with a strong squad, securing the game very early
- Lukaku was back among the goals as he scored for the first time since his explosive interview in December 2021
- Chesterfield got a goal late on, but it only proved to be a consolation
Romelu Lukaku scored for the first time since being reintegrated back into the squad as Chelsea predictably eased past national league side Chesterfield in the FA Cup.
As expected, the Blues were too strong against their visitors on Saturday, January 8 and they were up and running as early as the sixth minute.
Notably, Thomas Tuchel started a very strong team for the third round and it was Timo Werner who opened the scoring in the sixth minute as he slotted in from close range before Callum Hudson-Odoi curled in a beauty to make it 2-0.
Lukaku then got onto the scoresheet, getting to the end of Lewis Hall’s cross for his first goal since the explosive interview he did in December 2021.
Chelsea, who were runners up in the FA Cup last season, made it 4-0 before half time through Andreas Christensen, who headed in on the rebound.
Hakim Ziyech, who was overlooked by Morocco for the Africa Cup of Nations, made it 5-0 with a powerful penalty after Christian Pulisic was fouled in the box 10 minutes into the second half.
Chesterfield eventually gave their travelling support something to cheer as Akwasi Asante bagged a consolation goal late on.
Newcastle suffer shock third-round exit
In a much more surprising result, Newcastle United, currently one of the richest clubs in the land, suffered a shock defeat at the hands of League One side Cambridge United, who triumphed 1-0 in an interesting tie.
It was striker Joe Ironside, who grew up idolizing Newcastle legend Alan Shearer, who scored the only goal of the game to break the hearts of Newcastle fans at St James’ Park.
