- Joe Ironside scored the only goal of the game as the Magpies failed to get past keeper Dimitar Milov, who was in inspired form
- The defeat summed up what has been a miserable season so far for Newcastle, who are under new ownership
The FA Cup once again lived up to its reputation of producing some classic upsets on Saturday, January 8, but none will be as eyebrow-raising as the one involving Newcastle United.
The Magpies, currently one of the richest clubs in the land, suffered a shock defeat at the hands of League One side Cambridge United, who triumphed 1-0 in an interesting tie.
It was striker Joe Ironside, who grew up idolizing Newcastle legend Alan Shearer, who scored the only goal of the game to break the hearts of Newcastle fans at St James’ Park.
Cambridge put up a spirited performance and somehow managed to keep out the Magpies, who looked devoid of ideas, especially in the absence of injured Callum Wilson.
Despite dominating possession and pressing high from early on, it was Cambridge who had the first sight at goal, with Adam May’s strike going over the bar in the opening five minutes.
Newcastle eventually created their own chance, through Allan Saint-Maximin, who met a cross but failed to keep his header on target.
The Frenchman went close again but again could not guide his shot goalwards.
Notably, Cambridge goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov was in inspired form, keeping out Saint-Maximin and Jacob Murphy.
Eventually, the deadlock was broken in the 56th minute, wiyh Ironside tapping in from close range after Newcastle failed to clear the ball following a spillage from goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
The visiting goalkeeper made a stunning save to keep out Joelinton late on to ensure Cambridge walked away with the win, to keep their FA Cup dream alive.
One side note of the game was that it was a miserable start to life as a Newcastle player for Kieran Tripper, who recently signed for the Magpies from Atletico Madrid.
