Super Eagles New No.10 Revealed as Players Get Jersey Numbers For AFCON 2021

Rangers midfielder Joe Aribo will be wearing Nigeria’s iconic Number 10 jersey when the Africa Cup of Nations kick-off this Sunday in Cameroon as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) released the shirt numbers of all participating nations at the tournament Pulse Sports reports.

Aribo will be hoping to toe the line of great like Austin Jay Jay Okocha who is regarged as one of the continent’s greatest player and John Obi Mikel who had in recent years wore the iconic number 10 at the AFCON.

Sparta Rotardam goalkeeper Maduka Okoye will wear the number one jersey for the Super Eagles, while Francis Uzoho has been assigned the number 23 shirt, Daniel Akpeyi has number 16, and John Noble of Enyimba will wear 27.

Semi Ajayi and Frank Onyeka will wear number 6 and 8 jerseys, respectively, due to the absence of injured duo Leon Balogun and Oghenekaro Etebo.

Returning midfielder Kelechi Nwakali will put on number 25 while Taiwo Awoniyi and Umar Sadiq will wear numbers 19 and 24, respectively.

Nine players led by captain, Ahmed Musa, Kenneth Omeruo, Chidozie Awaziem, and Ola Aina have all retained their previous numbers.

The Super Eagles will have as high as 11 players making their debut at this year’s AFCON.

The likes of Joe Aribo, Kelechi Nwakali, Sadiq Umar, Chidera Ejuke, and Maduka Okoye will be representing the Super Eagles at a major competition for the first time at the AFCON.

Nigeria will kick-start their 2021 AFCON against Egypt on November 11.

Earlier Sportsbrief reported the director of communications of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ademola Olajire, has confirmed that striker Odion Ighalo will not be part of the Super Eagles squad to AFCON 2021.

Olajire disclosed that the player’s Al-Shabab club of Saudi Arabia says he won’t be released.

This is a setback for interim coach Augustine Eguavoen who will be looking to lead the team to win their fourth continental title.
