FootballPanic for AFCON Participating Teams As Cameroon Separatists Bomb Host City Limbe
- Cameroon separatists have continued to threaten the start of the Africa Cup of Nations as they have attacked city of Limbe
- Reports claim the separationists set off a bomb in the city which will host Group F teams Tunisia, Mali, Mauritania and Gambia
- Local police however say that no one was killed in the incident and that security has now been beefed up in the troubled region
The Cameroon city of Limbe descended into chaos as separatist fighters set off an improvised explosive device (IED), although local police say no one was injured, Xinhua reports.
Limbe is the host city of Group F matches at the Africa Cup of Nations in games involving Tunisia, Mali, Mauritania and Gambia.
PM News are reporting that separatist fighters in the country have vowed to disrupt the AFCON tournament as they claim they do not want matches staged in that region.
It was gathered that they took to social media to claim responsibility for the blast and further threatened that it was “a warning sign of what we will do during AFCON”.
What is Cameroon government doing?
Cameroon authorities have however deployed additional ammunitions and troops to the region in order to undertake routine day and night patrols.
Separatists had since 2017 been clashing with government forces in Anglophone regions of Southwest and Northwest where they want to create an independent nation they call “Ambazonia”.
AFCON will officially begin on Sunday in the capital Yaounde and will run for four weeks.

The Atlas Lions of Morocco have been the talk of the town since the North Africans arrived in Cameroon for the start of the 33rd edition of the African Cup of Nations starting on Sunday, January 9.
The Moroccans arrived with an 86-man delegation ahead of the tournament comprising of 28 players, technical and administrative staff.

FootballHes Goals reports the North Africans are also not taking chances as they brought in their own food, cooks, mattresses, beds, and hotel staff to work in their temporary abode in Yaounde.
The Moroccan Federation has ensured rooms and other compartments at the team’s hotel in Yaounde are sterilized, while beddings and blankets have been replaced by those transported from the Kingdom.

Sports Brief earlier reported that Christian Atsu, the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations Player of the Tournament, has said Ghana can win the Nations Cup in Cameroon this year.
According to the Saudi-based winger, the Black Stars has a strong team, with a blend of experience and youthful exuberance to make history at AFCON 2021.
Many Black Stars fans remain doubtful of the team's ability to compete after the 3-0 defeat to Algeria in a friendly, but Atsu who was speaking to 3 Sports has urged the nation to support the squad in Cameroon.
