Guinea Bissau defender Fernandy Mendy is feeling confident about his team’s chances when the Djurtus take on the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the group stage of the 2021 African Cup of Nations holding in Cameroon.
Guinea Bissau has been grouped alongside Egypt, Sudan, and Nigeria ahead of the Mundial with many tipping the Pharaohs of Egypt and the Super Eagles to scale through to the next round ahead of Guinea Bissau and Sudan.
However Complete Sports reports Fernandy Mendy who plays for Scottish League One club Alloa Athletic is feeling upbeat about his team’s chances against the two heavyweights.
The 27-year old stated that a win against Sudan in their first group game will give Guinea-Bissau the confidence needed to face the Eagles and Egypt with the possibility of a positive result.
“Everyone knows we have a very tough group and we have Sudan in the first game.”
“If we can win that game, then it will give everyone the confidence to try to do something against the biggest teams.
“Nothing is impossible in the tournament, anything can happen in football and we all believe we can do something good,” Mendy said.
Guinea Bissau will battle the Super Eagles in their third and final group game on January 19 after confronting Sudan and Egypt respectively.
