  • Hlompho Kekana, one of the most successful footballers in the history of South African football, could pitch up at a new club in the coming days
  • The 36-year-old free agent departed Mamelodi Sundowns in November, and was mistakenly thought to have retired
  • Baroka FC, Cape Town City and Amazulu were rumoured to be the teams chasing his signature, with the latter being able to count on his experience in Africa

Legendary midfielder Hlompho Kekana appears to be on the wishlist of several clubs with lofty ambitions.

The 36-year-old former Bafana Bafana star departed from Mamelodi Sundowns last November after 10 glorious and trophy-ladden years at the club. It was thought he was retiring, but it turned out he was a free agent instead.

Now, according to Kickoff.com report, Kekana has appeared on the radars of inland and coastal teams. The veteran midfielder is said to be in talks with Limpopo-based Baroka FC, Cape Town City and Amazulu.

According to the article, the publication's source said:

"Hlompho met with Baroka last week. He is still undecided about his next move regarding his soccer career. Both AmaZulu and Cape Town Town have also made enquiries."

However, Baroka FC chairman Khurishi Mphahlele ended the speculation, telling the Daily Sun:

"Honestly, we would love to have him in our team, but we need to be realistic, we cannot afford him. He is a good player and everyone knows it. He has achieved a lot in football and any team would love to have an experienced player like him."

Amazulu begins its inaugural CAF Champions League campaign in February, and a previous winner of the competition like Kekana would help in bolstering the KwaZulu-Natal team's ranks. However, Usuthu and Cape Town City had not yet commented on these rumours.

Khanye was quick to point out that the move will benefit both the player and the Pretoria giants after the 34-year-old was unveiled as the Brazilians' latest acquisition at the start of the January transfer window.
