PSL denies Kaizer Chiefs postponement requests, dividing Mzansi on social media
FootballPSL Announces Press Conference with Awkward Legal Matters Still Up in the Air
- The Premier Soccer League has announced on social media that its chairman Irvin Khoza will be hosting a televised press conference
- Though the subjects of the press conference weren't discussed, it comes amid legal matters the organisation has to resolve quickly
- Speculation was rife about what Khoza would discuss, with various football fans hoping issues close to their hearts will be put to bed
The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has announced a televised press conference for tomorrow, Wednesday, 4 July, which led to whispers and outright shouting about its purpose.
The posts on the PSL's official Facebook and Twitter pages stated that chairman Irvin Khoza would host the press conference, but did not specify the subjects of the gathering. The PSL is currently embroiled in various legal matters which need to be resolved speedily.
Kaizer Chiefs did not honour fixtures against Cape Town City and Golden Arrows last month after a Covid-19 outbreak at the club, reported IOL. The club had requested a postponement of these and other fixtures, something the governing body requested. There is a distinct possibility that the Amakhosi could be docked points.
Another outstanding matter involves Royal AM, which was crowned champions at the end of the 2020/21 National First Division season, guaranteeing the club automatic promotion to the DSTV Premiership. However, Sekhukhune United were then confirmed as the winners of the title because of a technicality stemming from a fixture against Limpopo rivals Polokwane City.
As detailed in Soccer Laduma, City had improperly selected players for this match, resulting in United being awarded three crucial points, leapfrogging them above Royal AM. This resulted in an uproar for the ages, which threatened to upend the 2021/22 South African football season, with the matter going as far up as the Supreme Court of Appeal.
Amid this furore, Royal AM Shauwn "MaMkhize" Mkhize bought out DStv Premiership side Bloemfontein Celtic's league status.
The response to the Facebook and Twitter posts were speculative.
