Unknown to many today, there was a time when Benfica was at the pinnacle of European football, and its players were at the centre of it all. The top 10 Benfica legends have positively impacted the club throughout its existence, and their legacies outlived them.
Benfica is synonymous with not winning any major European trophies in the last six decades. Still, they remain Portagual's most decorated football club and one of Europe's best talent development centres for players.
These players have made quite a name for themselves both in the team and outside because it will become evident throughout the list; Benfica is responsible for some of the household names we have all come to know and love.

10. Victor Lindelöf

Starting the list is Victor Lindelöf, otherwise known as the Iceman in Lisbon. This Swedish international joined the club at the tender age of 17 in 2011 to its youth system. Nevertheless, he rose through its ranks, and by the time he was leaving in 2017, he had won three Portuguese league titles; two Taca De Portugal titles and one Taca De Liga title. He is usually considered one of the best and most promising defenders the club has seen.

Another one of Benfica's football legends is David Luiz. A young 19-year-old David Luiz made his European debut with The Eagles. After a somewhat tumultuous start at the club, he became the club's franchise player after just two seasons, making 130 appearences for the club in all competitions and helping them win the Portuguese Premera Liga after a five-year drought.
The fact that he was considered to be resigned even after departing the club 10 years prior, last year, shows his legacy supersedes him at the club, and he is always considered one of Benfica's legend defenders.
8. Jose Augusto

At 127 appearances, he currently holds the record for international games appearances, is the player with the most titles won for the club, and is the longest-serving captain the club has ever had.
4. Mario Coluna

In his 17 seasons with The Eagles, this Portuguese with African roots was known as Sacred Monster and is often regarded as one of the best midfielders of his generation and the best midfielder amongst Benfica's legends of all time. In his tenure at the club, he was instrumental in winning twelve titles, including 10 Portuguese league titles and 2 European titles. He is also widely respected for acting as a father figure for Eusebio, his fellow countryman and another Benfica legend on this list.

Currently serving as Benfica's president, Rui's journey with the club began at the tender age of five. His great playmaking skills, which he nurtured at the club, earned him a spot in his generation's all-time greats. His spell with the club as a player was on two occasions, the first of which saw him help the club win two titles.

He received several personal accolades and awards during his stint with the club, the most notable being the 1965 Ballon d'Or and 1968 Golden Boots.
