Scaloni later joined Estudiantes de La Plata before transferring to Spain's Deportivo de La Coruña in March 1998 with his brother. Lionel played in Europe for Deportivo de La Coruña, West Ham, Racing Santander, Lazio, RCD Mallorca, and Atlanta. However, his brother Mauro did not go far with football like him.

Argentina beat Italy 3-0 to win the 2022 CONMEBOL UEFA Cup of Champions (Finalissima).

"At first there was mistrust. With us, with the coaching staff, it was quite difficult. Before Copa America, we had two qualifying matches and we tied them." De Paul said of his coach. "Now Scaloni could convince us of anything. Obviously, one is convinced when things [like the Copa America] happen."

As of 15 November 2022, La Albiceleste had played 33 matches unbeaten under Scaloni since losing 2-0 to Brazil in the 2019 Copa America semi-final. They have played 47 games with the coach and lost only four.
