Another Red Bull domination was the phrase that described the scene after Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez secured a double podium at the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix.

In recent years, the races at the Red Bull Ring have seen the Milton-Keynes team coast to victory with relative ease.

Although the Austrian constructor may not be enjoying the same level of dominance in the 2024 season, with McLaren breathing heavily down their necks, Red Bull Racing, especially with the impeccable talent of Max Verstappen, has consistently managed to grind out victories on traditional circuits like Barcelona and Japan.

Austrian Grand Prix Preview

The Austrian Grand Prix has always been hosted at the Red Bull Ring, with the exception of the inaugural race in 1964. This iconic old-school track has become a staple in Formula 1, especially since its return to the sport’s calendar in 2014.

In the past, Mercedes AMG largely dominated the Austrian race. However, since Max Verstappen burst onto the scene, Red Bull Racing has firmly held their home race, with Verstappen winning five times in the last eight years.

This season’s edition seems poised to continue in a similar manner, albeit with more difficulty for the Red Bull team. The Constructors’ leaders have seen their dominance, which they comfortably wielded through the first two years of the ground effect era, significantly challenged by competing teams, particularly McLaren.

Since the Miami Grand Prix, the Woking team has proven to have the fastest car on the grid. However, the exceptional driving prowess of Verstappen has meant McLaren has only secured one race win despite their upgrades.

This edition of the Austrian Grand Prix will see Red Bull introduce another part of their upgrades to the RB20 car before a major upgrade at the next race in Silverstone. The Milton Keynes team might not be the fastest currently, but racing on an old-school track offers them a significant advantage over the rest of the pack.

Scuderia Ferrari has again fallen short of the high expectations set for them. Despite entering last week’s Spanish Grand Prix with another set of significant upgrades, the Maranello team has found themselves dropping even behind Mercedes, whom they used to lead.

Frederick Vasseur and his team are certainly searching for answers to their current lack of pace. However, the sudden departure of their Technical Director, Enrico Cardile, as reported by Formu1a Uno, will do little to help them return to the expected level of performance.

Toto Wolff might still be basking in the idea of signing Verstappen from Red Bull, but it must be said that the Mercedes team chief has his Silver Arrows positioned to challenge for podium finishes.

The W15 car is finally looking competitive again and is expected to only get better. However, despite the improvements made by the chasing pack, Red Bull remains the favourite to clinch victory.

Austrian Grand Prix prediction

While the race is expected to be close, the addition of the Sprint to the weekend will undoubtedly add a significant twist to the action.

However, based on previous events, it must be noted that no matter what challenges are thrown at Verstappen and the Red Bull team, they have consistently proven capable of pulling a rabbit out of the hat. This weekend is expected to be no exception, and we predict another race victory for the Dutch driver.
