  • Lewis Hamilton will join Ferrari for the 2025 F1 season
  • The record champion has raced for Mercedes since 2013
  • He signed a two-year extension with the Germans in 2023

Lewis Hamilton is set to make a blockbuster switch to Ferrari from next season. The British driver will leave Mercedes after an illustrious 10-year spell that saw him win six Formula 1 world championships.

The announcement comes only a few months after the British racer had promised to stay put with the Toto Wolff-led franchise, despite their struggles in recent seasons.

Hamilton hasn't won a race in two years, with the Red Bull duo of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez proving too dominant for other teams in the circuit. The former has claimed three consecutive world titles, including his maiden controversial triumph in the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP.

However, the Briton remains the most successful driver in the sport's history, winning 103 times over the years. He joined Mercedes from McLaren in 2013.

The 39-year-old recently signed a contract extension that would see him remain with Mercedes for the 2024 and 2025 seasons, but as Sky Sports reports, a 'break clause' was inserted in the contract allowing him to leave after the upcoming season.

He is now expected to partner Charles Leclerc under Frederic Vasseur, with the future of Carlos Sainz now in doubt.

Sainz's contract expires this year and he was hopeful of a contract extension. The Maranello-based team extended Leclerc's contract earlier this month but did not reveal how long it was, as explained on the Formula 1 website.

The developments come a month before the 2024 season begins in Bahrain.

Hamilton finished third last year behind Verstappen and Perez last year. Mercedes finished second in the constructor's championships, with Hamilton and George Russell combining to beat Ferrari by two points.

Madrid GP stokes controversy

Sports Brief has also previously reported that the addition of the Madrid GP to the Formula 1 calendar has been received with mixed feelings from fans.

F1 recently announced that the new circuit would be added from 2026 to 2035, with many underwhelmed since street circuits are seen as monotonous.
