  • The launch of the 2024 Formula 1 season is rapidly approaching
  • The sport's governing body are seeking a number of big changes
  • F1 recently confirmed the addition of a Madrid GP to the calendar

The commencement of the 2024 Formula 1 season is scheduled for late February.

However, it appears that the sport's governing body are well ahead in their plans for the seasons - even extending beyond this year.

Looking ahead to the 2026 F1 season, which is already marked by significant changes to the aerodynamics of current cars to align with the sport's net-zero eco-friendly sustainability goal, there is another major shift in store.

As reported by Formula1.com, the Madrid Grand Prix is set to make a return to the F1 calendar.

The reintroduction of the race in the Spanish capital is expected to span from 2026 to 2035. However, this recent development has sparked controversies among various stakeholders and fans of the sport.

Madrid GP announcement sparks controversy

While many appear happy with the addition of another race to the European leg of the sport, confusion lingers regarding the decision to opt for another street circuit.

This choice has raised eyebrows, especially in the context of the ongoing criticism directed at existing street races, which have been labelled as more monotonous compared to traditional F1 circuits.

The Grand Prix in Monaco, in particular, is frequently criticised as one of the most uneventful races due to its structure as a street race, resulting in fewer overtaking opportunities.

The timing of this announcement coincides with the sport’s governing body's struggles to secure an extension for the Barcelona GP, indicating a potential end to another iconic Formula 1 circuit.

This pattern, with the introduction of the Madrid GP and the fading prominence of the Barcelona race, mirrors the scenario witnessed with the iconic Jerez Circuit in Cadiz.

Barcelona has hosted the Spanish GP at the Circuit de Catalunya since 1991, with a contract initially set to run until 2026.

While the possibility of both cities hosting races is not entirely dismissed, it remains a challenging proposition, especially considering the concerns voiced by drivers and teams about the already congested F1 schedule.

Verstappen opens up on his driving style

Sports Brief also previously reported that Red Bull Racing's current world champion, Max Verstappen discussed his driving style.

The Dutch driver, known for consistently outperforming his teammates, was questioned about his preferred approach at the wheel.

The three-time F1 champion outlined certain aspects he favours in his style and also outlined his desires for the new RB20 model.
