FootballFormula 1: Red Bull Chief Discloses Reason Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton Will Never Be Teammates
- Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton challenged for the F1 championship in 2021
- A report of both drivers becoming teammates had emerged earlier in the season
- A Red Bull Chief has highlighted reasons why both drivers will not be teaming up
The 2023 Formula 1 campaign will go down in history as one of the sport's most eventful seasons.
The season, which was characterised by Red Bull Racing’s sheer dominance, had enough time for many other acts to steal the spotlights.
From the eagerly anticipated but seemingly regressive upgrades by Haas Racing to the unending struggles of Mercedes AMG, the season provided fans with a plethora of captivating moments.
Despite the spotlight on Red Bull's dominance, a dramatic subplot unfolded towards the season's conclusion.
According to reports from Team Principal, Christian Horner, as relayed by Sky Sports F1, Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton allegedly approached him regarding the possibility of replacing the embattled Sergio Perez for the 2024 season.
Horner hinted that Hamilton's camp had expressed interest in a seat at Red Bull Racing before the driver ultimately renewed his contract with Mercedes.
However, the seven-time champion vehemently denied these claims, asserting that it was the Austrian-licenced constructor which had initiated contact.
Marko on Verstappen and Hamilton being teammates
Amid the conflicting narratives, a Red Bull Racing official has outlined why a partnership between Hamilton and Max Verstappen is implausible.
In an interview with Motorsport.com, the team's chief director, Helmut Marko revealed the reasons why the two drivers would never team up:
"Christian informed me and showed me the text message he received, but I told him: 'Hamilton and Max, that doesn't work'. There was too much action and, how should I say, tension in 2021."
He continued: "On the other hand, we cannot afford to have the two most expensive drivers in one team. It's just never going to happen. So I told Christian: 'No way'."

FootballMarko's sentiments align with the concerns of many stakeholders in the sport, particularly the financial implications of accommodating two drivers with similarly high salaries within the Red Bull Racing team, based in the UK.
